Honors Spanish IV (42419431): This course is designed to make language learning a rewarding experience as well as to improve the student’s Spanish language skills in the areas of listening comprehension, reading, speaking and writing, with a concentration on oral and written communication. Students will explore the interrelationship of ideas and values in order to explain “why” and to anticipate “how” particular cultures will respond to events, problems, and questions. Emphasis will be placed on the presentation of information, concepts, and ideas in spoken and written form. Students will write and perform various skits, mini-orals, in both presentational and interpersonal modes. This course is designed for intermediate proficiency level students. In the intermediate levels, students develop an increasingly accurate use of Spanish grammar. Building on work in previous levels, students learn more subtle and idiomatic uses of grammatical forms. Performance Standards: The focus of this course is standards-based and performance-based instruction using the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century, ACTFL Performance Guidelines for K-12 Learners, and the JCPS Core Curriculum Content Standards (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities). Core Academic Content: Vocabulary related to units of study, all verb tenses of the indicative and subjunctive moods, grammatical structures to include: conditional and imperative forms, sequence of tenses, use of subjunctive in noun clauses.
Units of Study: 1. El individuo y la personalidad, 2. Los derechos humanos, 3. Esas modas que van y vienen, 4. El empleo y la economía, 5. La diversidad humana, 6. La tecnología y el progreso, 7. Nuestra compleja sociedad.
Resources/Materials Needed:
Textbook: ¡Auténtico! 4 , and Aventura Woorkbook (are provided) Students purchase: 3 subject notebook, 1 twin-pocket folder, and $5.00 fee
Forms of assessment/grading scale: A variety of formats and scoring guides will be utilized to evaluate student performance in specific areas related to functional proficiency. Individual scoring guides will be discussed before each assignment or assessment is to be completed. Below is a listing of the areas that will comprise student grades with a listing of the percentage each area counts toward the overall grade. 1)Student Engagement With Standards (20%).

Because of the nature of this class, your active participation in all activities is expected and required. In order to receive the maximum grade, you must attend class, participate actively in class discussions and activities every day, and speak Spanish as much as possible. At the start of each class learners will respond a prompt related to current material (warm up activity). 2)Student Progression Toward Standards (30%).

Homework will help to practice and review vocabulary, grammar, and language skills in general. Student will be allowed to redo their homework, if they turn it in on time. Self-assessments serve to analyze and set goals to improve their language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish. Quizzes serve as periodic mini assessments of vocabulary and grammar acquisition and are most often announced beforehand, but you can expect some pop quizzes as well. Pop quizzes generally cover information learned that week in class. 3)Student Mastery of Standards (50%).

Performance assessments, presentations, and projects for this course are tools to measure student performance in the language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The results will help the teacher and students to set new learning targets in order to allow student growth. WIKI will be use to do group projects.

I reserve the right to assign an alternative activity on the same topic, when possible. Make-up test are given on Monday, after school in my classroom. No exceptions. The Academic Integrity Policy established by SBDM and approved by the JCPS Board of Education will be strictly enforced. Any instance of cheating will result in a Zero o the assignment. Plagiarism: This is serious academic offense. The SBDM approved policy will be strictly enforced. No exceptions.
Copying homework or allowing one’s homework to be copied is a form of plagiarism.
Use of a computer translator program is a form of plagiarism.
Work edited by a native speaker or an educated speaker is a form of plagiarism.
